The Royal Navy Community Trafalgar Sail Project

Korbond Industries
The Royal Navy needs your help! To celebrate the 250th anniversary of HMS Victory’s launch in 1765 The National Museum of the Royal Navy are inviting people to take part in an exciting community project. As part of the campaign crafters are being asked to create embroidered squares measuring 6 X 4 inches inspired by HMS Victory and HMS Alliance using a variety of techniques such as knitting, embroidery and crochet. The squares will then form a community Trafalgar sail art installation which will be on display in the Portsmouth Museum this summer.

Special workshops are being held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth Dockyard for people to come along to, learn new skills and see some items that link to embroidery and other handicrafts from the Navy’s historic collections. Sessions are being held on Monday 20th April and 18th May 2pm – 4.30pm. The NMRN invite crafters to join in the fun at these relaxed and informal sessions. If you are a beginner it is a great opportunity to learn how to knit, crochet and embroider. Take the opportunity to discover some of the embroidery items that aren’t on display. Please note this is a free event but booking is needed. Please email if you would like to take part. If you like the sound of this exciting project but cannot attend the workshops you can also post your contributions to the museum:

‘Community Trafalgar Sail Project c/o Daniel Ball – Community Engagement Officer, National Museum of the Royal Navy, HM Naval Base (PP66), Portsmouth, Hants, PO1 3NH.

Daniel Ball, (Community Engagement Officer – NMRN) says: ‘The Community Trafalgar Sail project is an inspiring way for local people to be inspired by their local heritage and to celebrate two significant anniversaries of two very important vessels which call both Portsmouth and Gosport respectively their home. We are delighted to announce that Korbond has kindly donated a range of materials for the project especially for people attending the project’s workshops to use and learn more about HMS Victory’s and HMS Alliance’s stories’.
